Glenda,

You can try replacing the HAL from the recovery console (or any boot disk
and the OS CD) - just expand it into the original location - you can first
rename the old one to hal.bad if you want but you don't need to.

Good luck,

Mark

Hi All.

Thanks for everyone trying to help with this. Thought I'd get y'all caught
up.

The problem
HP System w/Maxtor 40gb HD inexplicably booted w/invalid or missing
NTOSKRNL.exe error. =20

Actions
Suspecting a virus, ran Symantec AV software - No virus.
Put the suspect HD in a good system but could not access any files or
directories related to user profiles.
Edited Boot.ini, increased the partition by 1.=20 Attempted booting again in
the original system. Got an invalid or missing HAL.dll Back in the working
system, ran CHKDSK /r. After 4 hours, got a message saying 1 or more bad
sectors.
Downloaded & am currently running Runtime Data Recover software. It's been
about 30 hours and only 18% read. What I can see of the log isn't promising.
The next step, if this doesn't help, is to send the HD off to a recovery
service and see if they can rescue some of this very nice family's mementos.

I really hate the idea that they stand to lose all their irreplaceable
family records.

...sigh. /g
