Quite often this is the result of a disk failure. You can run setup from
the distro CD in Recover Mode to restore the missing files if rebooting
the system from the disk is the desired result.

Not a bad move! My Documents is specific to each user and the profiles for
each users are stored in <drive>\documents and settings\<username>\

Once you find those directories, you may have to Take Ownership of the
folders and files. Right click the folder, choose properties, security
tab, ownership button.

If you can't find the Documents and settings folder then there was
definitely disk damage.

A perennial favorite for recovering files is OnTrack Data Recovery in
Minnesota.
