Subject: [lit-ideas] Re: Hands Across The Bay
McEvoyis considering the ontology of Popper’s W3. I am still considering the
‘granulation’of it, if that’s the word.Inany case, there is this interesting (I
find) essay by M. Hark,
athttps://www.rug.nl/research/portal/files/14455566/Popper_otto_selz_and.pdfwhichseems
intriguing in, like Grunebaum, Hark quotes extensively from Meinong.(Grunebaum
hoped that his distinction between “there is…” and “there exists”would create
no “Meinongian jungle”!)Harkis, granted, not primarily concerned with Popper’s
W3 – which seems like alater development in Popper’s philosophy –, but rather
what we may call ‘theearly Popper.’ And so one would need to rephrase some of
Hark’s observations inW3-terms (or not, of course!).Ihave appended the abstract
and the references below.Cheers,SperanzaGrunebaum,“Vacuous Names,” in
Davidson/Hintikka, “Words and objections.”Hark:“In this article it is argued
that Popper’s well-known deductive andfalsificationistic epistemology is
historically rooted in German psychology, notably the work of Otto Selz. Drawing
on Popper’s early and still unpublishedpsychological manuscripts it is shown
how Otto Selz’s psychology of thinkingwith its emphasis on the guiding role of
schematic anticipations gave theimpetus to Popper’s theory of problem solving,
his theory of the Searchlight, and its attendant rejection of empiricism, the
socalled Bucket theory ofknowledge. In the second part of the article it is
argued that Selz’s theory ofschematic anticipations is rooted in Meinong’s
Gegenstandstheorie. BecauseMeinong’s theory was partly an attempt to do justice
to the objectivity ofthinking, this may explain why the anti-psychologist
Popper felt neverthelessattracted to the psychology of
Selz.”REFERENCES:Adler,A. 1927. Menschenkenntnis. Leipzig (Engl. transl.:
