I know what you mean Nathan, but I'm not sure Vuescan is any better.  With
any film scan you are going to have to work on the image in photoshop to
some degree. With silver halide film, you are also going to have to spot.
But its not so bad, once its done, you've got a good photo file that can be
printed from time and time again.

Lovely shots all three!

As for Vuescan, I think it is superior to the Nikon software in its
ability to get more information out of a slide or negative. I have never
used any of the cleaning settings, for the reasons you describe--they
all introduce some softness. I am afraid there is no free lunch...I
recently submitted some scanned images to a stock agency, and given that
they require perfection, it meant patiently going around the image at
100% and remove blemishes with the clone tool. I think I will stick to
digital for stock ;-)
