Tina, you may want to try this if you haven't. Scan
the negatives as RGB color using Digital ICE. Then in
PS, use the Adjust>Channel Mixer and check the
monochrome box at the bottom. Use the sliders to apply
post processing filters (red, green or blue)trying to
stay near a total of 100% for the sum of all channels.
I find this works well for me in the situation you
describe. I stopped using VueScan and just use the
Nikon software.
