You shouldn't have to do that.

If connected click on the Cloud tab to see your books online. If you tap any
book it should then download to your Fire and show up in the Device tab.

I might get mine by the weekend with any luck..

The other bit that was a surprise is the way it handles purchased books. 
On the kindle they are all stored on the Device. The manual, which I bought
this evening, says each one is downloaded to the Fire, only as you opt to
read it. On a cruise, where internet prices are horrendous, that means I'll
have to use the Kindle instead.
