actually, msconfig was not advisable as a permenant solution in 98 either.
it is a diagnostic tool and if you use it and find that something is causing
jaws to miss operate, you then put things back the way they were and fix the
problem. It is kind of like using safe mode with flexibility. You don't
run in safe mode all the time and you don't run with ms config in diagnostic
mode all the time. The other thing you should know about msconfig is that
some programs will put themselves back if you uncheck them or they can cause
your pc to crash due to parts of them wanting to work and not being able to.

As to your issue, it might be a good idea to reinstall your video driver or
update it if it is not the newest one. If that doesn't work, rolling back
the driver might fix the problem, some times, an older driver is better.

The other thing you could resort to is uninstalling all jaws and any other
freedom scientific products and other assistive technology you have on your
system, cleaning all their fragments out of the registry and reinstalling
them after a good disk check and defrag. I know this is labor intensive but
it could well be worth it.

Without doing anything, just open administrative tools, open services and
walk down the list. each service has a discription and there is plenty of
documentation around for services that you need more info about. It's
easier to deal with services than it is to configure word for optimal use
with jaws <grin>

Hi David

Thanks for that timely advice. I also did a quick Internet search, and
it seems that MSconfig isn't the preferred route under XP as it was say
with Windows 98 for disabling startup programs. So, I beat you to the
punch and re-enabled the program.

And doing anything with Administrative Tools and disabling services is
way, way beyond me. I think I'd end up messing the system up and making
it unstable. That would be my luck.

The whole thing about text going missing is an annoyance, and I won't
take experimental drastic steps to fix it because the cure might be
worse than the problem. Smile.

So far, FS hasn't nailed this one down. They also mentioned cursor
blink rate, but I've set that to what they recommend. They said put it
at 63 or higher.
