Jean,

Pre-bought systems don't automatically have the monitor driver configured
because manufacturers use a master "image" they simply copy onto the hard
drive of each new computer. They make some adjustments that would be common
to all the computers they ship, but monitor drivers are not among them since
customers may choose from a variety of monitors that could plug into those
systems. There's no way the company could stamp out an image for each type
of monitor they sell so they simply use the generic "plug and play" or S3
video driver and leave it to the customer to apply the specific video driver
if they choose. Most people will never touch that setting, and for most the
generic drivers will do just fine. Sound cards, CD-ROMs, etc., are specified
and drivers are installed for those because they are INSIDE the computer,
but a monitor is something readily changeable and is outside the box, hence
you won't find its driver already installed.

Hope that helps you understand the process a little better.
