I am thinking of this for several months. I am a Java developer

Welcome. You have lots of company (and Indian). Check out the java
open-source landscape. It's very, very rich. Check out places like
TSS(theserverside.com) and O'Reilly's ONJava. There are a lot of new
projects where they would readily appreciate any help, even if it comes
from a Martian.
... and very
rarely I have seen an Indian answering the questions. That is what
made me ask this question.
Are you sure? Though I admit that the number is very less, the landscape
is about to change - very soon. You'll find a lot of Indian people
answering questions in lists like struts-user. You should also remember
that internet access until very recently is a costly proposition -
something young people, with the most time to contribute, cannot afford.
So there's less chance to learn from other projects, even lesser scope
to contribute.
But that shouldn't stop you - check out projects like www.openwfe.org
(where I contribute documentation). John Mettraux, the project
maintainer, is looking for a good PHP developer. Perhaps you can help?
Good luck,
Vamsee Kanakala.
