Tamil Speaking world should soon produce an GNU/ Linux OS and that should be
used.
Small portion of all the all the investments the TCS, Wipro, Infy and other
Softies invest can be directed for this...
No need to worry. This has already been done and a lot has been
achieved.
OpenLX Linux was launched in Feb 2005 and by now more than 45,000 CDs
have been shipped and over 1,00,000 downloads have taken place.
There are users all over India apart from those in 30 countries and the
response is great.
The Distro is available as GPL for free downloads from www.openlx.com
and has two versions.
A single CD distribution is made for the Desktop users (using OS,
Office, Internet, Grafics, Multimedia, Utilities and kalculate-demo) and
it has become the easiest to install Linux. There is no scope of making
a mistake while installing it.
We would like the Tamil-language using community to help build the
language in the distro (The KDE and Gnome stuff is already there in
Tamil) so that it can be more easily adapted by the Tamil language
users.
I can send you a few copies, if you send me your address and they can be
shared among the LUG members and others.
India deserves its OS and we have taken this steps.
We have to customize Ubuntu to suit our (Tamil) needs. We are/ or just began
to work towards this... BOSS initiative of NRCFOSS is a right step towards
this.
Well Fedora + Ubuntu derivative would suit... Ubuntu is gud to install and
is more user friendly.. But to suit Tamil from scratch (atleast the
inputting part) Fedora is gud.. We need to put little efforts to get Tamil
features in Ubuntu as on date... We wil make Ubuntu too of that kind...
To be frank I have tried only these two versions... Other distros am least
aware of.. Heard that Mandriva was the first Tamil GNU/ Linux OS... and Suse
too supports Tamil well.. Otherwise a person of Uma Shankar's calibre
wouldn't have chosen it...
Lets bid next time for Ubuntu ;-)
