Tend to agree... when I used a workstation I still had a PC on my desktop for
email, documentation and meeting connections (meeting maker/outlook). Now
granted, I could do email using UNIX and Pine... but folks would send me
documents that had to be updated and mined for data... that eventually went to
the PC and Word.

Ultimately I ran the PC through a VNC connection from UNIX just to unclutter my
desktop... but the PC was still there and thus so was the expense.

Now running from PC alone, I can easily cut and paste data from one screen to
another, take snapshots of the schematics and layout and paste them into docs
(used to mail them from the UNIX box to the PC to do this) and I only have one
machine on my desk... with lots of memory.

I miss certain command line things in UNIX... but I can always telnet into one
of the company UNIX boxes to do certain things (grep.... )

Now further regarding UNIX workstations... Have they come so far down in price?
PCs can be had for only a couple K... UNIX boxes???

Steve,
In my opinion, the reason to switch to a PC is the wealth of
compatible software that is available. I used to use a unix workstation
and was very happy with it. Now I use windows and don't really
like the limitations that windows puts on me. But, on the other
hand windows has the upper hand in the application and compatibility
space. At this point in time, given the choices available, I would
choose windows. I would pick the most powerful 2 processor machine
you can get with at lease 1G of memory. I have had almost no
problems using win xp and feel it is as "good as windows gets".
Best of luck,
