Hi, Phyllis.
The codeine is the pain killer; the diazepam is the muscle relaxant.
Your disc won't slip back where it's supposed to be if your muscles are tensed 
up. These drugs, when they take effect, should slacken the muscles in your 
spine a bit and aid the healing.
I know this won't be much compensation, as you'll be feeling rotten at the 
moment, but this is exactly the right thing to be prescribed.
