"Plugins must be able to have zero or more editors. Each editor may
have zero or more windows."
this covers the case of an editor that uses a private protocol to
communicate with a dedicated hardware control surface. there is no GUI
element whatsoever, but the editor still requires all the usual
interactions with the host that a GUI would.
