I can try to find out how large the other repositories are. The 40GB should be large enough for main and security from what I remember. We will need so few packages from restricted/universe/multiverse that it may be better to just download and install them manually rather than mirror the entire repositories. We can still save them locally. I haven't looked into what it takes to run a custom repository, but I think it is more complicated than a mirror because you have to maintain the package lists and digitally sign stuff yourself. The archive mirror itself is basically just a web server, so the specs aren't that important. I was testing with a P2 or P3 with 64mb of ram. I'm not sure if we want to set up a pxe boot environment for it or not. I am far from a networking genius, but I was able to get it working. It can be nice for some things, but isn't necessary. I've found that many older systems don't have network boot options in the bios, but virtually all can support it with a gpxe boot disk. In my test install I had network boot options for ubuntu install, dban, slitaz live cd, and a few bios flash utilities since I had many similar boxes running less than current bios versions, and I couldn't find a working floppy disk. Slitaz was kind of nice to have for testing since it boots up fast even on systems below our freebox minimum specs. (Thanks Chuq for introducing me to Slitaz on this list many moons ago.) I thought I would have free time to set up a repository at work then move it to the workshop when the Internet connection was ready. But my free time at work evaporated long before we got the Internet connection up at the workshop. I still have the 1U server in my IT room, and I will bring it to the workshop next Thursday. The Supermicro 1U server has (1) P4 2.2 MHz cpu, (1) 40 GB SATA drive, FD, CDROM, (2) Intel gigabit Ethernet ports, (2) PS/2, (4) USB, (1) VGA, (1) serial. If by your estimate we need a larger hard drive, let me know how big. I am reloading Ubuntu Server 10.04 LTS on the system now because I forgot the login credentials. I’ll find out how much RAM is in the box later. It sounds like things are moving along very nicely. I might be able to assist with setting up the repository. I had one working several months ago. I don't remember exactly how I set it up, but I'm sure it would come back to me quickly :) One thing that I do remember is that it is pretty large in terms of disk space. I think I was only mirroring binaries (no source) from the main and security repositories because universe/multiverse are enormous. I don't remember if I tried restricted. This time I was able to get everything configured correctly and it went off without a hitch. For the time being I have the wifi security set up as UWD (Unplug When Done).
