While the method you list will work, when you use crontab -e, you're
using the old "ed" editor.  When "ed" first came out it was considered
to be very user friendly - if it didn't understand something you typed
it said "?" <grin>.  My method will let you use vi or textedit on a
normal text file and then reload it to crontab when you're done.

It'd also be a good idea to save a copy of the crontab before changing
it - crontab -l > /opt/home/crontab.save or something similar
depending on where you normally save files to.
