Deborah, in Word you can right-click on a paragraph, then select Paragraph from the context menu that appears. I've found that "unexplained occurrences" can often be dealt with from the Paragraph window. Also if you click on the paragraph symbol on the menu bar, you'll see things like paragraph returns, spaces, and tabs ... these sometimes cause strange things when you don't know they're there.
