Thank for that, though I'm still a bit ??

The files I was using Win side were just .BMP, and as per the previous
time, after the problem surfaced, I took the set of BMP files RISC OS side
and dropped 'em in the appropriate frames, thereafter the document
illustrations were okay on both OvPro sides of the OS divide.

It sounds to me as though the .BMPs are converted when you drop them 
in.

If you control-double-click one of them, it should launch into a 
bitmap editor, from where you should see what they now are. My 
suspicion is that they are now sprites.

I must, as it often my nature, have a mess with it some more and see what
turns up,  ;-)
