Just my 2 pennies, but I was ready to quit AMD altogether until I discovered something a few months ago. I usually use Asus MBs for just about everything, but Asus and AMD do not play well together for some reason. Of course this is not true for everyone, but I've had lots of problems with this combo. Using other brands of MBs I have no trouble at all. From my experience building PCs, I don't think the cheap brands of MBs are necessarily bad. I've built at least 10 PCs using a cheap BioStar with AMD and so far not one has had any problems, and they are quite fast as well. As a matter of fact, I've used other no name MBs and never had a problem. I think Asus is more for techies who want to OC, although most of what I've built is Asus.

I may stop using Asus with Intel as well. Although I've not had problems, I recently put together a server with an Intel MB, and I like it much better than Asus, especially for this. Let's face it, their all made in Taiwan anyway, so....

Now you're scaring me Russ. The processor I bought for my puter is an AMD 64:~ )

I had the same problem with Athlon XP processors last year, don't feel bad.

What about doa motherboards?
I just returned an asus mb that wouldn't post. It got power because the mb light was on & the processor fan ran, but that was that.
Another brand did that to me earlier this year. Considering I've only built five computers in the last year & two mb's were bad that seems high.

Crucial is the factory retail/wholesale outlet for Micron so the people you deal with are Micron employees and engineers. I've never had bad Micron memory, nor Kingston but Samsung has been occasionally screwy - we had to remove Sansung memory from numerous Handspring Visor Deluxe units when I worked for the contract rebuilder in Louisville a few years ago - Micron memory was fine and stayed with the units.

Ho Peggy, I don't think I've ever heard of anyone 'harming' a Pc by installing the wrong ram? Usually it either works or you wind up with a no boot situation that requires resetting the BIOS.. no biggee there tho...If Crucial says their ram should work, AND if they'll refund your $$ if it doesn't, then I'd be trusting them. Personally, I've been using Kingston Value Ram for the last year now and it seems to be the most 'forgiving' ram around....some of the guys I know that are heavy into overclocking and games swear by this ram..you might check them out..or if you send me the info on the old machine I could find out for you...either way I think the idea that you'd harm the PC by trying this is pretty slim...especially if it's coming as a recommendation from a reliable ram manufacturer.
HTH,
Bruce

Subject: [CTS] RAM

I am working with an older Gateway computer that needs more RAM. Gateway says they don't manufacture RAM for this particular model any more. I looked at the RAM avaiilable at Crucial.com, plus have spoken with them. They have RAM that they say 'should' work in this Gateway.

In the past, I've accidentally installed the wrong RAM in a PC, and all that happened is the PC wouldn't boot. However, I've been told that the Gateway could be harmed if I get this RAM from Crucial and install it.

Any advice/opinions?

Thanks
Peggy G
