If you want a nice easy Linux installation, get RedHat. 
StormLinux (Corel) looks promising, at least that's what
I've heard (never installed it myself).

As far as sharing files, you are going to do light years
better with a linux box.  Not only was Linux designed from 
the ground up to be a multi-user, time-sharing system, 
it doesn't force you into a GUI that salivates at the 
sight of CPU ticks.  

Linux will gladly serve to windows clients while looking
exactly like an NT box, it will even happily tell clients
that it is running NT, when asked.
