Some books are just an excuse fore really off the wall stuff, but some of the
fascination is with characters who have lived so long and have special powers.
the mystery man who drops an interesting historical tidbit into a conversation,
or looks just like a painting from the seventeenth century, who appears out of
no ware and vanishes again, who is unharmed in attack, but fears sunlight.
Like elves, they're a lot more interesting when introduced into the world of a
persen who is unaware of their existance than they are in a world where their
existance is taken for granted. Some, of course, are interested in them for
much, shall we say earthier reasons, but I like the mystery aspect.
