I may very well need specific instructions because I really do not know how to transfer without the companion, but there is one hurtle to get past, I think, before those specific instructions would help. The hurtle is that when I open up "my computer" with the Stream connected or if it is already opened up and I then connect the Stream everything freezes up. JAWS will read tab when I press that, but it will not read anything else on the screen to me. I can't cut and paste anything if I can't tell where it is. That is why the technical support guys at Humanware gave up at that point and said that they would have to consult with someone else and call me back. I don't know how the consultation went, but they never got around to calling me back. In a message dated 8/16/2008 5:43:20 P.M. Before you know that, you have to understand how to transfer stuff from your computer to the Stream. The Companion software only works if you understand that concept. The reason the Companion software just sat there was because it was looking for books on your computer, not on what it considers to be a peripheral, your DVD or CD. You need to tell it where to look. Your computer considers your DVD to be a separate drive, so you need to tell the Companion sofrware where to look for your books. Sometimes it's just easier to do things manually. It's often faster, too. I'd just cut and paste, using My Computer. If you need specific directions, write me privately. Ann P. -- Ann K.
