I still don't quite understand about book edge scanners. Do you scann one page, let the other hang off and then turn the book around? I can't quite get a picture in my mind. Cindy, thanks for asking the question. I didn't know what a book edge scanner was either.

A book edge scanner is one where the book hangs down over the edge of the scanner. That way, you don't have to press down on the book to avoid missing words in the spine, or the scanner seeing a shadow of the spine. You just push the spine right up to the edge of the scanner and let the other half hang down.I do sometimes break the spine, or that's what it looks like anyway, because it can be hard to ensure that the middle is getting scanned properly. But the ones I've taken to be examined at the library they told me looked okay. Although they looked a bit crooked to me when I was done with them. This tends to happen more with paperbacks than hardcovers.Personally, I don't see why some people have such a problem with damaged spines. If the pages are not damaged, then the book is perfectly readable and it even stays open better too. But some people seem to. True, they don't look pristine from the factory. But neither does anything else after its been used. I'm certainly not going to pay more than twice as much for a scanner just to prevent the spines from looking a little worn.Evan----- Original Message ----- From: "Grandma Cindy" <popularplace@xxxxxxxxx>To: <bookshare-discuss@xxxxxxxxxxxxx> Sent: Thursday, August 16, 2007 7:51 PM Subject: [bookshare-discuss] Re: Scanner questionI have an Epson and true, I do press down on the spine, but I've never broken one, either hard bound or paperback. Once I was scanning pages from a paperback that already was broken and had loose section, and in that case I think I contributed another one or two, but, as I said, it was in bad shape to begin with. What is a book-edge scanner? I can position the books in such a way as that they are flush with the edge, either the bottom or one side or the other. I have a 1660 and think I had a 1250/1650 before. Cindy --- Evan Reese <mentat1@xxxxxxxxxxxxxx> wrote:It depends on two things: your budget, and how much you care about the condition of the book after you scan it. If you're not worried about breaking the spine of books, then lots of people think highly of Epson scanners. You can get a refurbished model from their web site for - I think less than one hundred dollars, although I haven't checked this personally. Since they're not book edge, you have to flatten the book pretty good to avoid missing words in the spine. But you probably know that. If you want to keep your books pristine, or nearly so anyway, then a great many people like the Plustek Optic Book 3600, which is a book edge scanner. The spelling of that might be slightly off. But that scanner will set you back around $230, giv or take. My scanner is 10 years old, and it seems to not be working well. I use openbook. Thanks for any suggestions of a good scanner. I asked my husband for one for my birthday, and he asked for suggestions of good ones that people use to read books with access software like Openbook. Thanks in advance for any help.____________________________________________________________________________________Ready for the edge of your seat?Check out tonight's top picks on Yahoo!
