We are all volunteers. We work for a long time on a particular book when that book presents difficult problems. Giving us too many arbitrary limits tends to ignore the fact that we have lives outside of bookshare volunteering. Again, I suggest anyone interested in a particular book ask about that particular book on the volunteer list.

This is a small tightly knit community. We will know if somebody gets sick or is going to be away for a long time or dies.

People have gone away for long periods and released their "hold for" books. Some people associated with bookshare have indeed died such as Gustavo. We will find out. Is there a particular book which concerns you?

Let me give examples of things which may effect "hold for books".
These are only some posibilities. Others exist. Each book is unique. "hold for" is used to address certain kinds of situations.

In absolutely all cases, any volunteer is free to inquire about a specific book. Mostly people who use "hold for" are on this list.

Here are some sample possibilities.

A volunteer has asked to validate a specific book.

Hold for Viji means the books in question are being validated in India.

A student has requested a book. Giving that student a "hold for" on the book means that student gets to validate it rather than somebody else grabbing it.

A person may have a particular skill such as knowing a foreign language or knowing programming. This skill makes that person particularly capable as a validator of a particular book.

Two volunteers may be working on a book with one person actually validating it and a second person providing descriptions of pictures from a print copy of the book. Sometimes it takes a while to locate a print copy of the book. This kind of situation requires skill in describing something and time waiting for the book to come into a library, just as an example.

perhaps the "hold for" books on step 1 could have an expiration date with the option to renew their "hold for" status on step 1. The

suggestion is because, really, it occurs to me that a validator for whom a book is being held could die and none of us would ever know about it. In that case, just how many years would a book remain on step 1 marked "hold for?" In a message dated 9/11/2008 1:42:18 A.M. Eastern Daylight Time, thoth93@xxxxxxxxxxxxx writes:
Roger I renew a "hold for" the same way I renew any other book on
step 2. So there is the option you requested already.

To repeat yesterday's message, if a volunteer finds a book with "hold
for" and wants to know about it and the volunteer whose name appears
on it, just write to the list and ask. We are usually polite to each
other on this list. We can work things out.

It just upsets folks when somebody grabs a "hold for" book without
asking first.

I give a lot of time to volunteering. During the past six years I
have validated hundred and hundreds of books. However, I actually
have a life outside of bookshare, there is a 5 book queue and there
are reasons for "hold for" which others have already described.
