Some folks do seem to think we have a problem.

I have written Carrie. We are arranging it so that Tracy will be able to have Myths of Sexuality in the next few days.

Tracy wait please and do not take the present copy off step 1. I am going to submit my copy. Then Carrie is going to reject it and put it back on step 1 with "hold for tracy" on it. That way, my work will be kept.

I will send you notes, Tracy, on what parts need work.

Then you and Cindy can fix it up.

Perhaps you will move faster than I have on it. Just give me a day or so to fix everything up so my work is retained.

I promise to send you explicit notes about the book privately.

E.

Evan,

Excellent points; thank you! And when you look at the books in processing there are lots and lots of "hold for" books that are being validated.

Honestly, I'm not sure why we are having this lengthy discussion of an issue that is not really a problem. Am I missing something? If a submitter sees that a "hold for" of one of their books has been on step one for a long time the submitter can contact the person that the book is being held for either via the list or by email.

I haven't checked recently, but when I have checked, and when others have checked, the number of hold fors on Step 1 has always been quite small relative to the number of books overall. And how many of that small number have ever been held for someone who has died or otherwise been incapacitated and not been able to pick them up? How often has this ever happened in the time Bookshare has been around?

Having a separate list for such a rare event seems like needless complexifying for volunteers and needless work for the engineers as well.

This is a small tightly knit community. We will know if somebody gets
sick or is going to be away for a long time or dies.

I disagree.
I don't know anyone on this list personally.
Did any of you know my father was very ill this spring before he passed
away? Did anyone know that I spent quite a bit of time travelling back
and forth between New Jersey and Montana as a consequence, and that it put
a crimp in my validating, among other things? I think not, since I did not
mention it on the list. When someone is having a crisis, validating and
chatting on this list can easily be ignored. Shocking to some, I'm sure.

But whatever. If books stay on hold forever and a day, I guess it's none
of my business, and I will tell myself not to care. There are plenty of
other fish in the validating sea.
