Hi Sue,As Mayrie says, it is a matter of opinion. For myself, I tend to not bother with indicating white space around chapter titles and such. I figure that if they are font adjusted, then they are navigable, which is really the important thing. Besides, it's pretty obvious when you are reading along and encounter "Chapter whatever", that you are starting another chapter. However, if there is white space indicating a change of scene or passage of time, I do preserve that with asterisks. It can be a bit jarring to be reading along and not realize that you are not in the same scene you thought you were, something you would have known immediately if you were a sighted person reading the print book. Some books have asterisks or bullets or a short line of dashes or something to indicate such things, but certainly not all. I insert asterisks if there is nothing already in the book to indicate white space in those circumstances.
I do leave blank lines around page numbers though. So if a chapter title is at the top of a page, then I do put blank lines around it to make sure there is one between the page number and the chapter title, although I don't bother with asterisks to preserve them in the Bookshare version in that case.

Hi Mayrie,It may make sense to Kim but not to me. If we put the blank lines in, and if the tools take them out unless there are asterisks to keep them, why keep them? They are not present in PQ books. I have wondered if it is time to let go of that method. Just my thought.Sue S.-----Original Message----- From: Mayrie ReNaeSent: Sunday, March 27, 2011 6:50 AM To: bksvol-discuss@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Subject: [bksvol-discuss] Re: A question of formatting Hi Kim, As Bookshare has no set rules on this, it is a matter of opinion. So, here's mine. Yes, where you suggest there should be blank lines, I put them. That said, remember that Bookshare's tools don't preserve any white space (blank lines). So, where you have a blank line, you would then putthree asterisks so that the reader of the copy of the book once it hits theBookshare collection, will know that there was a blank line to begin with. Does that all make sense? Let me put this another way: let us say I have a page I'm working on. Below the page number is a part number with a title, below that is a chapter number without a title, and below that is the text on that particular page. Let's say I have put thepart number plus its title at 18 pt. type and it's bolded in Times NewRoman. Let's add that the chapter heading has been bolded and at 16 pt. type in the same font. What I want to know is this: should there be a blank linebetween the part title and the chapter heading?Another question is if a chapter heading appears in the middle of the page, should there be blank lines between the last line of text and the heading ofthe chapter I'm about to proofread? Also, after I've done the usual thingwith the chapter title (16 pt. type, bolded, Times new Roman, changes saved) should there be a blank line after the chapter marking the beginning of thetext for that chapter? Regards, Kim Friedman. P.S.: I hope I made myself clear as that is what I was concerned about in my last message on this thread. Thanks much for the advice. Your chapter headings need notonly to be bold, but in 16 point font if the body is 12 point. If you havea part number and a chapter number on the same page, or anywhere else forthat matter, the Part 1, or whatever it's called will need to be bold and in 18-point font, chapter heading at 16-point and body of the text of the book at 12-point. If you do not enlarge the title of the book to 20 point, partsto 18-point, and chapter headings to 16-point with chapter sections at 14-point, there will not be proper daisy navigation. This navigation is important in my opinion. Putting asterisks on the line before and after a chapter heading or part, will let the reader know that there was white space in the book to begin with. Hope all that helps. I mention this because the present book I'm working on has chapters in the middle of the page and I'd like your opinion how to formatthis. Here's what I've done so far: After the last sentence of the previous chapter, I entered a blank line where I wrote in three asterisks, after thisline of asterisks, there's the next chapter heading which is bolded, andafter that I entered another blank line on which I wrote three asterisks. Is this correct procedure? My object for doing this is to insure there will be blank space surrounding the chapter title. Another question I have is how toformat a page in which the Part number, its title, and the chapter headingappears on the same page. How does one format this? Should there be a blank line between the Part title and the chapter heading? I'm concerned that thefile looks good when it's checked in. Regards, Kim Friedman.
