[AZ-Observing] Re: The Last Sentinel-Schwaar Star Gaze the weekend

I only met Pierre once, while visiting a SAC meeting while in Phoenix on
business. I don't recall very much about him except to say that he
impressed me enough (and got enough accolades from people like Steve Coe and
AJ Crayon) that I was going to order a 13-inch scope from him a few months
later-- then got the word that he was gravely ill with cancer. So I did not
place the order.

Although I don't have the close personal connection to Pierre that many of
you do, I would like to think that my memories of him (or any other person I
cared about) would be in my heart and thus portable and not tied to a
particular piece of ground. As I see it, whether we have the winter star
gaze at Sentinel, the Antennas, or downtown Phoenix does not matter. What
matters is that we gather as friends and in remembrance of a great amateur
astronomer and scope building perfectionist. That's good enough for me.

While I too lament the prospect of not observing at Sentinel again, I do
understand the logic behind the move. I know that for you, Steve, =
Sentinel
is actually an easier drive, but you are in the minority there. While I
don=92t particularly feel there all that much risk from illegal =
activity, I
can't deny it's certainly higher than it would be at the antennas. I've =
seen
several vans of Future Filberto's workers cruise by under the cover of
darkness while there. I doubt they even saw us, and if they did, I'd =
suspect
they'd be more interested in NOT being noticed by us. Be that as it may,
Sometimes one has to accept that change is inevitable.

As Ken points out, there's nothing to stop anyone from observing there =
if
they feel safe in doing so. As for a club event, there are other things =
to
consider.=20

My policy he past two years has been to trust the event organizers =
judgment.
So far it's worked well.=20

I for one do not look at this as a "good decision". I first met Pierre =
at
Sentinel, and can not place him at any other site in Arizona. In my
(relatively few) years of attending this star party and this location, I
feel inspired by the memories of him in this location. When he'd arrive =
and
begin unloading 6 or 7 telescopes, mounts, binoculars, and sundry other
hand-made paraphernailia, the feeling of cameraderie washed over the =
field,
taking everyone with it. Moving the party somewhere "more convenient" =
for
some misses the spirit of the event entirely, imho.

Rosie and I have visited the Sentinel site on our own many times as a =
dark
site and "road trip" and have NEVER encountered any problems. It is =
close
for us and darker than Vekol, (which is essentially the same as our back
yard).

I can't say I'd attend a star party with Pierre's name on it at another
location. It wouldn't be the same. It may be your last trip there, but =
it
surely won't be ours.
