I was in Goreville Illinois Southeast of Carbondale. It was spectacular,
beautiful skies with just a touch of cirrus.
We did have a contrail go directly across the eclipse Sun. Obviously an
airliner or airplane Chasing The Shadow.
The drive back to Chicago took nine and a half hours. Instead of the usual
four and a half. We took mostly side roads to get back because Interstate
57 was a parking lot.

Set up my 80mm finder scope on a photo tripod at our office facility,
located near the southwest corner of the Deer Valley Airport. Beginning at
10AM the real clouds moved-in, including ones almost black (cumulonimbus -
methinks), The Sun couldnât burn through these clouds and at one point I
lost the image. Sucker holes were small and few between but I was able to
regain the view right around totality, so I, Tim Jones my son-in-law, and
neighboring suite tenants were able to catch a glimpse of the event. A fun
exercise and experience.

fortunately there was a huge sucker-hole leading up to and during totality.
Thousands of people just North of us were less fortunate. They were clouded
out at the Southern Illinois University Stadium. At least they had a lot of
entertainment up there, including a performance by Ozzy Osbourne singing
"Bark at the Moon".
