One advantage of using escape sequences is that
they're cross-platform (I think). The disadvantage is
that they can be hard to remember.

Alternatively, for menu commands, you can use menu
keystrokes, which appear in the UI as a reminder. For
instance, on Windows, you can press Alt e o instead of
Esc e y in the above sequences (except that Esc e y d
becomes Alt e o t).
