sadly I can't much more info that it says error overlaid on top of the
backdrop (no actually error box is visible) and if I then do ALT-Break it
changes to error from Window manager again no actual error window appears.

And what is the precise error from the Window Manager?

Just says error from window manager (nothing else is visible).

I would suggest getting hold of !Reporter. It captures error messages 
in its own window and should enable you to see what the error was.
