Here is how I would setup a naked X11 session:
* Go to the first virtual console (crtl-alt-f1)
* Become root
* These commands:
  init 3 (to kill off any existing X11 session)
  X :0 & (to start a new X11 session)
* Probably, this switches you over to the new X session, so you may need to
return to the console first (ctrl-alt-f1) to enter the following commands:
  export DISPLAY=:0
  xterm &
* Now go to the newly setup X session (crtl-alt-f<x> with
  <x> usually being 7, but it could be different)

With this setup, you have an xterm available to enter commands, but there's no
window manager. I'm not sure this is needed for any of the tests to run.

Hope that helps.
