That's where external modules (SecureSockets, RegEx) get loaded. Could
you try starting AS without these?

It appears to be related to loading the 2005 SecureSockets module.
AS starts up OK with the 2018 version, but then the secure mail
send app seems to get nowhere.

Right. I already have a version of AS that works with the new AcornSSL
module, but not the latest beta (there still aren't enough hours in a
day to get everything done...). The SMTP app MSC hasn't been handled at
all yet, though. I'll see what I can come up with over the next couple
of days (don't hold your breath...).
