Best way to "compromise" is to place brackets around the number and put it
on there. The brackets officially remove it from the document...

in case they try to deny or fine me (like the application threatens) if you
leave off the SSN. I have an ID that is due next year for renewal and I
would rather have the non-citizen national ID with no SSN attached to it.
