I understand their reason for not accepting the thumb impression. Since one 
can withdraw money only by using the ATM's, there is no way they can verify 
your thumb impression each time.  However, if you can sign at all, you 
should go ahead and use your signature. My signature is not perfect and 
changes every time. However, I have had no issues so far. By the way, mine 
is not a joint account.
Unless you sign, they may simply refuse to let you open an account with 
them. You should perhaps invest some time in learning to sign.
