IMHO.

Free doesnt' always mean rubbish.

What's that old addage?

"The best things in life are free"?

Personally before going for a corporates free product I'd look in the open source sectors.

Normally open sourced software is created by dedicated users/developers that do it for the love of creating efficiently coded applications, that are easy but powerful, that do the job they're meant to do. Plus they are often users of the software as well.

Plus there's the added part of the application can have many contributors to updating the code and weeding out bugs.

Two brains are better than one and all that.

Additionally 99% of the time the software is 100% free!

On Sygates front. I've used Sygate's free edition in the past and from the little investagations it's probably one of if not the best free software firewalls out there.

Another retail firewall that's not free I've heard good reports on is Look And Stop.

Mark, does that go for firewalls as well. Lots of folks are using the free sygate firewall software, with no problems.

To sound a little cynical here, I'm not that much of a believer in anything
free. After all, if its free, how can one shout at something if anything
goes wrong (in this case, AVG not stopping something malicious)? Just my
thoughts.

I too was using AVG until just over a week ago and thought it was doing a
pretty good job. Then I heard from several sources about people who had
switched to other programmes only to discover they had viruses that had not
been detected. I decided to try Avast and it found two instances of the
Win32 Trojan that Avg had missed. I now feel it's a good idea to
occasionally try something new just in case. You can always go back, if you
are not happy.

Best.

Robert.

Actually, I only very recently switched from Norton to AVG free
edition
and I am rather impressed with avg and also quite happy with its
performance.

Hi Marie, I'd purchase another anti virus. AVG being free means you get

It really isn't that good I find.

Guess what? NAV's playing up again, so, I'm contemplating using AVG
free edition. Think I've hit a snag though, when I read the product
limitations it says that it is not suitable for a network, we have 2
PCS networked sharing
the internet connection through a router.
Any of you using this version with a config similar to mine? Any comments
on
this matter welcomed.

Cheers now,

Marie
