This is not the first time I have heard of this happening over time with the PTN1. Indeed, I was experiencing similar difficulties before mine was replaced with the current PTX1. I found that tilting it or even giving it a slight shake caused the disc to be accepted. Not very technical, but it worked.

this whole thread it seems to me highlights a much wider issue which is probably off topic for this list and that is the very poor standard of customer service we are getting from RNIB at the moment. Things have definitely not improved since the introduction of everything having to go through Customer Services. I think RNIB needs to address this as a matter of urgency.

Just to add to this. I have the PTN1 model, which packed in last week. I was told by someone at RNIB customer services to send it to Kevin Ground. I phoned back, wishing to speak to him. It's going to be a hassle to send it back, and wanted to know whether the cost of a repair would be much less than getting a new player. He wasn't at his desk, so the person I was speaking to sent him an email asking him to ring me. Over a week later and I'm still waiting. Drives me crazy. It's not reading any discs I put in. I can put them in, and then that little tune plays, but it doesn't pick up the formating, then spits it out saying "improper or damaged disc." I even tried with a laser cleaner. I know the discs aren't damaged. If I have time today, will be back on the phone.

Jill.

Yes, all places seem to be like that these days and we all experience the frustration this causes.

I would Carol if only I could get through to someone in an
authorative position but I cannot. It is a bit like
going to the doctor and the receptionist interviewing you
and not letting you through to the doctor.

Yeah, and I'd call them and ask them please to sort it

David
I quote from The May New Product Guide.

This new player replaces the popular Plextalk PTN1 and
heralds a new phase in the development of Daisy. It is
similar in size and shape to its predecessor but the
button size and layout has been changed, making them
easier to distinguish and more intuitive to use. A USB
port and SD memory card slot provide users with access
to a wider range of reading material. The built-in
memory provides an electronic bookshelf where users can
store their favourite content, and it comes with a 12
month subscription to RNIB's BookStream book club. It
also has a text-to-speech programme which further
expands the range of content that can be accessed.
I cannot see how it can be claimed that the offer is
closed.

Madleen,

As I understand it, your final comment is incorrect. I
tried to buy the PTX1 together with one year's
subscription to the Bookstream Book club but was told
that this offer had now closed. I therefore just
joined the Bookstream club for £50.
Having said that, I read last week in New Products that
the offer is still advertised. If I find that it is
still current, I will be most displeased with RNIB.

Hi

It's not just for new members.
Ring up talking books and ask I don't know whether you
can still be on the pilot project.
You might be interested to know, that the RNIB sells
the player in combination with the 1 year subscribtion for
the rnib booksite/bookclub for
£195 too

Just thought I'd let you know,

Madleen

Hi Eleanor

I'm a member and this is the first I have heard of it.
However, I haven't had time to read 'Read on', so I am
at fault there.
I was contacted by the talking library some months ago,
but it was just to see how I rated the current service
- No mention of the new talking book machine.

It's a shame that only new members are eligible. I
suppose we could cancel
then re-join.

Cheers

Barry

I am wondering how many members on this list use the
RNIB Talking Book Library and ow many of those members
were contacted about the new type of Talking Book
machine which can be used with USB Flash Drive. I
understand that there is a pilot going on at present
with regard to this machine but equally I understand
that no existing member of the library will be
entitled to one of these new books, only new members
will receive them. For those of
you in the pilot, what do you think of the machine and
out of interest did the Talking Book Library contact
you directly about this pilot scheme or did
you hear about it through Read-on, the Talking Book
Library CD sent out to members.

Eleanor
