I know that Jim and I have heard that myself. Now I actually think that is not a sensible approach and could be a waste of resource. You could end up with hundreds of members receiving it and none of them choosing to use the computer component because they do not use computers. I know many visually impaired people are computer literate but there are those who are not also.

Hi Eleanor,

I had cause to call the talking book library this afternoon and took the opportunity to ask about the ptn machine, and the lady informed me that when the ptn's come on stream, it will be on a first-come-first-serve basis, irrespective of length of membership. If your machine breaks down etc, and if you request a new machine it will be the luck of the draw as to what player you are sent. Can't say fairer than that.

Steve that is very helpful indeed. I cannot be expected as a member to respond to a generic advert amd when I contacted the RNIB I was duly informed that the offer was now closed since 20 February. I would have no problem offering feedback to the RNIB Talking Library.

That's not quite true Elanor, I am almost positive that there was a forwarded email to the Access List from the RNIB Arena list. This invited TB members to be involved in the pilot. The requirement was that you had an internet connection and they were offering a new PTX1 player to 1000 members. You were to mail them with your details and at the apropriate time, they'd basically pull out the first 1000 names who contacted them. As it was, the take up wasn't as much as they'd anticipated so they only gave out in the region of 850 players. Now, I'm not sure if they would exchange a player now or not but you'd need to contact them. Another requirement was that you'd need to be part of the testing group and offer feedback back.

Hope that helps.

Steve

I am wondering how many members on this list use the RNIB Talking Book Library and ow many of those members were contacted about the new type of Talking Book machine which can be used with USB Flash Drive. I understand that there is a pilot going on at present with regard to this machine but equally I understand that no existing member of the library will be entitled to one of these new books, only new members will receive them. For those of you in the pilot, what do you think of the machine and out of interest did the Talking Book Library contact you directly about this pilot scheme or did you hear about it through Read-on, the Talking Book Library CD sent out to members.
