Upright ears are dominant. What we do does not go against nature at all. In fact we mimic nature by making selections which mold the dog to fit into its place in the world. In the GSD's case, that would be herding sheep for man as flock tenders. The "unnatural" comes in when breeders disregard the breed's original purpose and instead breed for personal preference. Of course, anyone can breed dogs for whatever they desire. It's a free country. However, when what we breed does not resemble the GSD standard, it can only be considered to be a poor representative of the breed. It really doesn't even matter if ten judges pick that poor representative as their winner. A GSD either resembles the standard or it doesn't, and no amount of accolades from people who are ignorant to the standard will change that.
