Disney actually only glommed onto the act at the end -- the US Congress was trying to conform with EU law when Disney recognized the Golden Opportunity and grabbed it. But Mickey Mouse has little to do with it -- this is a brand and a logo and is therefore eternal so long as it is maintained.
I am interested as well in the EU's support of "author's rights", a position adopted about a decade back. The UK seems to ignore this.
