No, use the cement based stuff - and not the cheapest one on the rack in the store either. You want the thinset with the additives in the bag - Lattacrete (?) I do not remember the specific type name. The last time I got thinset (ca 6 years ago) it was about $12/bag versus $6-7 for the cheaper stuff. Somewhat of a pain to mix but you make up enough for a couple of hours of tile setting. One of those big dry wall compound mixing paddles, a variable speed 1/2 inch drill (right angle version), a 5 gallon bucket and you are off to the races. Depending on what you are setting, mix 1/4 to 1/2 bag at a time.

Since you are going on an old concrete floor, wet the floor with a sponge before trowling on the thinset. It will bond better that way.

Premixed thinset is not cement based, and thus not ideal/a good idea/ in areas where it could have water resting on it (tiles will come loose with prolonged exposure to water)

Tile saw is packed in the back of the wagon as is the mixer, trowels, etc. See ya soon ; < )

Tile is not so hard to do. Big timesaver is pre mixed thin set. It is JUST the basement not your main living space. It might give you a good chance to learn enough to be able to redo the kitchen or bathrooms.
