Well this is because JPEGs used lossy compression and throw half the info away ;) Admittedly, Simon's workflow here isn't exactly getting all that info back...

also noticed that (at least for the first one) the PNG filesize is about 4-5x the JPG. Not sure if that is a concern. On Sun, Feb 21, 2010 at 9:50 AM, David Davis <feline1@xxxxxxxxxxxxx> wrote:Looks to me like there was a small but noticeable improvement due to the JPEG artefact removerand smoothing, although as you say, if you want a big difference, a re-scanwould be required. A tiny tip (although maybe it's just my browser not supporting this): the JPEG's were interlaced,so they do that "fading in bit by bit" thing, rather than scrolling in fromthe top as they download (so impatient readers get to see them ever so slightly quicker) -the same interlacing feature is available in PNG, it's worthwhile enablingit Paint Shop Pro's Save As... PNG dialogs. Because we may re-scan these maps (Books 9-18) in thefuture, we may need to re-alter these labels (Books 10, 12, 14, and 16) soI've created a small wiki page as a reminder of what will need fixing: <http://www.projectaon.org/en/Errata/MapCorrections> Slightly more technical info: The conversion from JPG -> PNG was straightforward enough. Ran the images through the JPEG Artefact Removerfacility in Corel Paint Shop Pro 10, then used Edge Preserving Smooth on avery low level to just cover over any blotches left behind. IMO the quality of the converted images, while not as crystal-clear as a re-scan, are acceptable for use in any re-releases, so that shouldn't prevent us from re-releasing any of these books.
