Looks to me like there was a small but noticeable improvement due to the JPEG artefact remover and smoothing, although as you say, if you want a big difference, a re-scan would be required. A tiny tip (although maybe it's just my browser not supporting this): the JPEG's were interlaced, so they do that "fading in bit by bit" thing, rather than scrolling in from the top as they download
(so impatient readers get to see them ever so slightly quicker) -the same interlacing feature is available in PNG, it's worthwhile enabling it Paint Shop Pro's

Ran the images through the JPEG Artefact Remover facility in Corel Paint Shop Pro 10, then used Edge Preserving Smooth on a very low level to just cover over any blotches left behind.IMO the quality of the converted images, while not as crystal-clear as a re-scan, are acceptable for use in any re-releases, so that shouldn't prevent us from re-releasing any of these books.
