I echo Jim. It is wonderful having such a resource on the list.

Grea to hear that we have another SWT resource on the list. I've been
developing with Eclipse / SWT since about 2005 and favor it over SWING / AWT
any day.

Susan - no offense taken. Even with 14 years of continuous Java programming and
teaching experience, I wouldn't relish the thought of having to spend time
cramming the subtle details for the certification exam.
Jim - There are many factors, including the fact that I am annotating a
tutorial written several years ago by someone else in an attempt to make that
tutorial accessible.
Perhaps the greatest factor derives from the fact that I am producing SVG files
for most of the drawings in the portion of the material that I am writing and
some of the drawings in the older tutorial that I am annotating. This will
make it possible for students to use an embosser or swell paper to produce
tactile versions of those drawings.
I am also converting everything from Swing to SWT to make it accessible.
Basically, I wrote all of the code for my material several years ago with no
thought given to accessibility. Now I am having to rewrite all of that code
using SWT in place of Swing and having to update the existing code to produce
the SVG output files.

Jim Corbett who is blind and certified.

I'm not blind.
If you examine my website carefully
(http://www.dickbaldwin.com/toc.htm), you will see that I began publishing
online Java tutorials in 1997, which I believe, was before Java certification
from Sun was even available.
During the past 14 years, I have published more than 600 free online
Java tutorials ranging from Java fundamentals
(http://www.dickbaldwin.com/tocknowledge.htm) to such topics as Adaptive
Prediction using Java (http://www.developer.com/java/other/article.php/3610806)
and Redeye Correction in Digital Photographs
(http://www.dickbaldwin.com/java/Java363.htm).
During that period, I have taught object-oriented programming to
approximately1500 students using Java, C#, and C++.
My most recent Java programming effort is a freely downloadable program
named SVGDraw01, which makes it possible for blind students to draw just about
anything they can imagine
(http://www.austincc.edu/baldwin/SWT-SVG/SVGDraw01.zip). In order to write that
program and make it accessible, I had to learn to program using SWT instead of
Swing. That was interesting.
I am currently in the process of publishing new course material for a
course titled Mathematical Applications for Game Development at
http://www.access2science.com/rbg/ I am striving to make that material as
accessible as possible, which increases the time and effort required to write
the material by at least a factor of five.
I recently published Accessible Physics Concepts for Blind Students at
http://cnx.org/content/col11294/latest/, which was showcased in "How a
Professor Gave a Blind Student a New Outlook on Science" at
http://chronicle.com/blogs/wiredcampus/how-a-professor-gave-a-blind-student-a-new-outlook-on-science/34424
I believe you are the first person ever to ask if I am certified. I am
not. I have never felt the need to spend the money to take the certification
test.

The material was written when Java 1.4 was current.
With the possible exception of focus traversal, I doubt that you will
find that any of the additions to Java since v1.4 have deprecated the material
from v1.4. If that is a concern, I believe that Sun has maintained a list of
deprecated classes and methods somewhere on their website. Java 1.5 included
major changes to focus traversal that broke a lot of code that was written
earlier.
Of course, there have been a number of additions to Java since v1.4,
such as the addition of generics in v1.5, but the fundamentals haven't changed.
By the way, Java 1.7 has now been released. We will start using it in
our computer labs in the Spring semester. The most significant difference that
I have found so far between 1.6 and 1.7 is that programs compiled using the 1.7
compiler cannot be executed using the 1.6 JRE.

The material is somewhat dated, but you may find the material linked to
"Test Your Java Knowledge" at http://www.dickbaldwin.com/toc.htm useful.
If you take a look at it and find it useful, let me know and I will

Once I explained the reason for such all was well.

Hi Listers,
I have been told I must pass the S C J P certification for any hope of
a promotion. I know Jim Corbett has passed the exam. I would love to hear from
anyone else. Jim is in Canada so his experience with the testing organization
might be different than what others have had in the United States. My questions
would be what was your study method? What was the reaction when you wanted to
take your assistive technology to be used? I would like to have both my JAWS
and Braille display. I find it much easier to keep track of everything like
those parenthesis. Did any of you get the practice test from whizlabs? How many
times did you have to take the exam to pass it? How much time were you given?

I am really hoping for a response on this
