[program-java] Re: Java certification

The material was written when Java 1.4 was current.

With the possible exception of focus traversal, I doubt that you will find
that any of the additions to Java since v1.4 have deprecated the material
from v1.4. If that is a concern, I believe that Sun has maintained a list
of deprecated classes and methods somewhere on their website. Java 1.5
included major changes to focus traversal that broke a lot of code that was
written earlier.

Of course, there have been a number of additions to Java since v1.4, such
as the addition of generics in v1.5, but the fundamentals haven't changed.

By the way, Java 1.7 has now been released. We will start using it in our
computer labs in the Spring semester. The most significant difference that
I have found so far between 1.6 and 1.7 is that programs compiled using the
1.7 compiler cannot be executed using the 1.6 JRE.
