Paula, Since all 3 computers have this problem I'm leaning more and more towards the possibility of a virus. I would suggest installing the free version of MalwareBytes' Anti-malware from http://www.malwarebytes.org/, have it Update to the latest definitions database, and then run a Full Scan. It couldn't hurt to also run one or two online antivirus scans. If the problem is not a virus, then no harm done, just lost some time. BTW, from what I've read and from comments from others, I believe AVG is OK, but not one of the best free anti-virus programs. I believe that Avira and Avast are probably the two best free ones. Well, even the best anti-virus programs miss some viruses, so when you think you might be infected, try one or more free online scanners of different brands than your installed one, to be safer. You can find several by doing a google search for "free online virus scan" (without the quotes). My favorites are the Trend Micro Housecall, Kaspersky, ESET, and F-Secure. Does he save attachments by double clicking on them or by right-clicking and choosing "Save as"? Hmm, it is interesting that he can get mail ok, but just can't save the attachments. That could be at a point where the AVG tries to scan the attachment. Is AVG on all 3 computers? Are there any other security programs installed? More than one anti-virus program installed could create problems. If you get the computer clean with the above scans and the problem is still happening, it might be a good thing to uninstall AVG and install either Avira or Avast anti-virus on one of the computers to see if that helps. I would definitely do the above scans first, to make sure you are dealing with a clean PC. He can go to Outlook via Safe Mode but the DEP message appears there, too. He used AVG free for his anti-virus. He d/loads a lot of music mp3's and movies from various yahoo groups and saves them to external hd...w/this DEP problem he's not able to save anything anywhere!! Thankfully he has 3 computers(all 3 of them can send & receive email via Outlook BUT also, all 3 of them get that DEP when he tries to save any of the attachments he received. I just opened up an Outlook Express account for him on one of his 3 computers and w/the OE he's able to receive the wav & movie attachments and is saving them to his external hd w/no problem. What's the chances of all three computers having the same problem w/Outlook(DEP)?? Hey Paula, Although there are ways to turn off DEP, I doubt it is a good idea to do so. The whole reason for DEP is to stop programs from running in parts of memory that they probably shouldn't be running in. This is often because of buggy programs or virus infections. If you were talking about an older program, a game, or from a small company that doesn't use top notch programming practices, then I would probably say that it might be ok to turn DEP off for that one program (but I would never 100% recommend it). Microsoft Office 2007 and 2010 do not fall into any of those categories, unless you are using 3rd party add-ons, in which case I would recommend uninstalling the add-ons. I was thinking that you might have a corrupt file, but if uninstalling Office 2010 and installing Office 2007 didn't help, then I doubt that that is the case. My best guess is that you are getting infected emails, which is probably the case if Office 2007 worked for awhile after installing it and then started having problems after downloading emails. A decent anti-virus can prevent this. What anti-virus and anti-malware programs are you using? It could be useful to know if Outlook works in Safe Mode, although I'm not 100% sure if Outlook ever works in Safe Mode. Unfortunately, my second best guess is that Vista might have corrupt file(s). This could be difficult to fix. For future reference: Almost all problems with Windows can be fixed if you run System Restore soon enough after the problem starts.
