Judith,
    Much depends on the program or site in question.  For me, it primarily 
added extra room on either side of my old monitor.  Nearly all programs that 
have a full screen setting will take advantage of the extra room.  Within 
your browser, not all sites will expand to fill the extra space.

    If the height of the widescreen is the same as the height of your 
current CRT, the screen should look the same, except for the extra space on 
either side.  If the LCD is taller, it will likely use a higher resolution 
so that everything will appear a little smaller that what you're used to 
seeing.

    If you have the opportunity, always check out the model that interests 
you at a store that has one hooked up to a running system.  Call ahead and 
see if the store will tell you if they have one on display.
