Sandi,
While I can't be sure from the description here, it could be a problem
with your video card. Although it's probably not a driver problem, I would
try updating those first (since it's easier than my next suggestion). If
that doesn't help, try reseating the card in its slot as explained below.
The contacts can develop corrosion or just become loose over time.

Turn off the system, open up the computer case and locate the video card
(it'll be the one connected to your monitor). After unscrewing and removing
the monitor cable from the back of the card, place your left hand's fingers
on the back of the card (I usually just grab ahold of the monitor output
socket), the pad of your right hand's middle finger along the opposite edge
of the card (where there are no electronic circuits) and gently lift the
card out of its slot. You may find that you need to pull up one side at a
time in a sort of 'rocking' motion until the card is completely unseated.
Once it's out of the slot, double check its position over the slot and press
it back in. This will almost guarantee that all of the connections are able
to transmit data, even if there was previously some corrosion getting in the
way.

Peace,
GMan

I, too, am running Win 98 SE and I leave it on all the time except for the
necessary reboots after running CleanUp and when it freezes up on me.
I do have a question for the group. Lately when I reboot the first things
up--Bios and PCI Devise Listing, etc.--pulses like it is going to jump right
out of the monitor and into my lap. Once in a great while that carries over
to windows but usually windows comes up and is o.k. What is causing this
and is it an indication of more problems to come? When this pulsating
carries over to windows I have to shut clear down and wait 5 to 10 minutes
before powering up again. So far this has worked.
Any ideas?
Sandi
