Flash media encoder can encode vp6 or h.264 for video and place it in a FLV transport wrapper. Flash media server can server these files *but* it can also serve MP4 and MOV files.. to Flash Player. > Silkverlight uses a wrapper format that is part of the Silverlight "open > source" project. Silverlight is the equivalent of flash player. It can play streams from Windows Media Server which are usually WMV files, *but* Microsoft has released 'smooth streaming' (seek-based progressive download, basically) which allows one to stream MP4 and H264 based content from IIS to Silverlight (2.x). The open source Silverlight project is a byproduct of cooperation (monetary compensation cough) between MS and Novell. Unfortunately it's only in the 1.x phase so it is behind. It is not completely open source either. And the open source community is still weary to adopt because it is based on Mono which is the 'open source' 'version' of the MS .NET CLR. They take this stance because they (rightly so) don't trust Microsoft's ulterior motives.
