I did try this just now by disconnecting myself from the exchange
server, and it did not let me do it!!

I'm not sure if the choice would work if I didn't have outlook setup to
work with exchange, but for those who want this at home, and if you find
the "out of office" functionality isn't available, you do have another
option: you could setup an outlook rule to mimic the same functionality.
You could set one up to send out a message from you each time an
incoming message triggers it. Still, you'd have to leave your pc
running, with your outlook running, to do this; it would be easier for
you to learn the web interface to your email account and to use their
functionality to achieve the same thing. You may not be able to deal
with your mailing list messages separately that way however, so you may
have to go stop each mailing list.
