From what I have seen, most of the netbooks that came pre-loaded with
GNU/Linux or with no OS didn't have the latest hardware configuration,
or were not customizable. Please let me know if you find one.
1. You, I, and everyone knows that distributions with the Linux kernel
will run on the latest hardware configuration. So, given a choice
between a low-end, non-customizable hardware, and a proprietary system
with high-end hardware, with lot of money being invested by the
individual, people will prefer to buy the high-end hardware.
2. Even if the hardware OEMs really wanted to support the F/OSS folks,
and decide to level the playing field, they could sell the highest
hardware configuration, with
A. proprietary OS, and
B. without any OS or with some F/OSS distribution.
Technically speaking, version (B) should be priced much lower because
there is no OS, and you don't pay for other desktop software. People
will definitely prefer to buy (B), and install whichever OS they want,
especially in countries where software piracy is common. But, since
this doesn't guarantee the proprietary OS vendor of his share of
market, he will not allow (2) to happen.
