Definition: A hot swap is the replacement of a hard drive, CD-ROM drive, power supply, or other device with a similar device while the computer system using it remains in operation. The replacement can be because of a device failure. Hot swapping works by providing a rack or enclosure for the device that provides an appearance to the computer's bus or I/O controller that the device is still there while it's being removed and replaced with another device. ! There is no word about exchanging a drive to get the data or so!!! It is only for replacing broken drives!!! Your data will be corrupted if you do this. It is a game of chance what you try to do. The RAID- and or SCSI-controller don't have a chance to save valid data because there is no signal that introduces your wish to pull out the disk. There is only a "signal" that there is something wrong and prevents the controller from using the interface.
